Careers for Teachers

GMCS needs teachers who will impart not only content knowledge but also a sense of self-worth and self-respect to our students. The Disrict has chosen to focus on the “3 R's” of Relevance, Rigor and Relationships to guide classroom instruction.

Many of our students come from challenging circumstances, yet they are talented and capable children who need only the opportunity to flourish and develop into happy, healthy, productive adults.

The State of New Mexico is raising the bar on professional standards and levels of remuneration for teachers. The “Three Tiered Licensure” system is the cornerstone of this initiative.

Three Tiered Licensure

The State of New Mexico has implemented a three-tiered licensure system that establishes Level 1, 2 and 3 teachers according to their professional qualifications.

Level Requirements and Base Pay Levels

Level 1 base pay start sat $30,000 for a person with a Bachelors and no experience. Level 2 minimum base salary is $40,000. Level 3 requires a Master's degree or National Board Certification, has a minimum base salary of $50,000.

Increments are available for additional education, longevity, extracurricular activities, leadership responsibilities, TESOL, National Board Certification, and other opportunities. For details, please see our payscales section, or contact us.

Paths to Licensure

A Professional Development Dossier (PDD) is required for all public school teachers to move up to the next level. This system increases expectations for professional educators, and it provides options for alternative routes to licensure and ways to demonstrate “Highly Qualified” status.

Teachers who have a valid license and experience from another state will be placed appropriately within the Three Tiered Licensure and salary structure based on documentation they provide to the Public Education Department and GMCS. Up to 20 years of comparable experience are transferable to our district.

District Support

The District provides support for teachers needing to complete a PDD for licensure advancement. A wide variety of additional information, including an overview of Dossier requirements, is available at www.teachnm.org.

Beyond Teaching

GMCS encourages qualified teachers with leadership potential to pursue areer advancement as assistant principals, principals and other administrative positions. Please view our Administrators page for more information on opportunities for professional advancement.
