Navajo
About 30 miles northwest of Gallup sits what many people think is the most Navajo town in the United States. More than 95 percent of Navajo’s residents have full or partial Navajo ancestry.
Navajo has a proud Native American history. It is home to the first Navajo-run saw mill. The tin buildings of the old mill stand empty today, and most residents commute to Gallup and nearby towns for employment. Navajo nonetheless remains a close-knit community of about 2,100 residents who support a small school and a hometown market.
Beautiful lakes surround Navajo, including Assayi Lake to the east, and Red Lake, Wheatfields Lake, and Tsaile Lake to the north, and are said to have some of the best trout fishing in the Southwest.
