Pueblo Pintado
The Pueblo Pintado community is located about 60 miles northeast of Gallup, and about 17 miles southeast of the world-famous Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Navajos have lived in and around Pueblo Pintado since the 1600s, and today the town is in the center of the six most-eastern chapters of the Eastern Navajo Agency.
Taking back roads is the only way to reach this remote community of fewer than 300 people, but every mile of two-lane highway is worth the splendor of both the trip and the destination.
Scenic views of the beauty of Navajo land stretch to the horizon on both sides of Highway 9. Pueblo Pintado is Spanish for “Painted Town,” and is named for famous ruins located about three miles east of the Chaco Canyon, the Pueblo Pintado great house, built on the summit of a rounded ridge, and visible for miles.
