Tohatchi

According to those who teach and live in the community 23 miles north of Gallup, the personal touch is not atypical—and helps make the wide open spaces of the small rural town feel like a great place to grow.

It’s a 30-minute drive for groceries and dry-cleaning, but residents gladly trade the inconvenience for other benefits. An open sky, an unobstructed commute (teachers walk to work), and low rent create a relaxed and happy pace.

Tohatchi is home to the Two Grey Hills Trading Post. More than a century old, and one of the few remaining historic posts on the Navajo Reservation, the post sells rugs and tapestries made of yarn hand-spun from the fleece of local sheep and known around the world as the finest in Navajo weaving.

The remoteness of Tohatchi from modern urban life might seem difficult and challenging. But the newcomer has only to gaze out on the vast amphitheater of indomitable desert sweeping around the town and running out flush with the pine-dotted foothills of the Chuska Mountains to appreciate the splendor of it all. Few other places can claim such extraordinary scenic beauty, or offer the rewards of learning more about the Navajos and their proud heritage.
